The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook Giveaway
January 8, 2010 | Filed Under Books | 588 Comments
Updated to add: This giveaway is now closed. The two winners are Tracy and Alaina!
This past week I made two recipes from the newly released $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook written by Erin of $5 Dinners. I made the Asian Chicken Wraps and Beef Roast and Potatoes. They were both VERY easy to prepare and delicious. Sure wish I’d remembered to take pictures for you.
The unique thing about Erin’s cookbook though is that out of the 200 recipes included every one of them was made for $5 or less. That’s quite a feet. And while I’m not sure I could match the prices she is able to achieve in her hometown of Dayton, Ohio, since I live up here in Northern Canada where groceries are pretty expensive, I do like that she breaks down the cost of each ingredient so you know exactly how she got to her total.
As you would expect the ingredients are straight forward and not fancy schmancy. I’m not a fancy girl by any stretch of the imagination and definitely don’t have the time to be running all over town trying to find something I can’t even pronounce that is for sure.
Another fabulous take away of the $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook, that I was really impressed with, are the many pages of how-to information at the beginning about strategic grocery shopping, couponing and meal planning. Everything you need to know about these topics is detailed for you in plain English so you can be saving money in no time. Erin does a great job of breaking it all down for you step by step so you too can be a savvy supermarket shopper.
My only disappointment about this cookbook is that each recipe does not include a picture. However several pictures are included in the middle of the book. I do understand though that it’s done this way in order to keep costs down. The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook is currently available on Amazon for only $10.19.
I have TWO copies to giveaway to two of my readers. To enter just leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite comfort food is?
Giveaway closes Tuesday, January 12th at 12:00 pm PST.

My comfort food changes with season and depends on if I am pregnant or not.
In the winter my comfort food is lasagna, in the spring it is grilled foods like hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken with coleslaw, in the summer it is spinach strawberry salad with strawberries that have been freshly picked and in the fall I love sheppards pie. When I am pregnant I seem to have some sort of adversion to red meat, sometimes I can eat it, but usually not and tend to bulk up my protein intake with more chicken and eggs (especially hard boiled, warm with toast and jam or cool with salads, sandwhiches, or as a snack.)
*I couldn’t have lied and made it easy…LOL!

Ha! Good question on a frickin’ cold northern Canada night! Has to be a carb for me. Bread is right up there but since I switched to a GF diet it is tough to find bread with the same texture. Popcorn is likely the best replacement with too much butter and nacho spice! A little bailey’s in the hot chocolate is great on a night like tonight as well.

It has always been soup. When I was a little girl, my mom would make me Campbell’s tomato soup, always with milk. No matter how sick I might be, I could always eat that and know that I was being taken care of. As a young adult, I lived next door to my aunt, who would make a fabulous vegetable soup on rainy days. She would always call me to come over and give me a big steaming bowl after a long day at work. Now, as a wife and mother, if I am sick or overwhelmed, my sweet husband makes mac-n-cheese for the kids and orders us chinese food so I don’t have to cook. He gets me the large won-ton soup with crispy fried won ton skins on the side. For me, soup is always a gesture of caring and is my total comfort food!

I’d love to tell you it’s a nice gorgeous salad (which I really do love) but in reality … it’s more like mashed potatoes with real butter, mac and cheese (homemade!) or a nice think and chunky soup. Okay, fine! It’s really ice cream.

It’s funny, because my favorite comfort food is related to the giveaway. It is chicken cacciatore.
I made Cinnamon Chicken yesterday, using Erin’s recipe, which she modified for the crock pot (and to be under $5) from a recipe by Cat Cora. When I finished I noticed it’s very similar to chicken cacciatore. I always thought I couldn’t make it, but now I found an easy and frugal alternative.

When I think comfort food I think winter so I would say Chicken ‘n’ Dumplings. Hmmm! I think food in general is comforting—that’s probably why I need to be dieting

My favorite comfort food is fried chicken, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on cob, squash casserole, and why not throw some ocra in there too! A good ol’ country supper with all the fixins. Of course would HAVE to be followed with peach cobbler for desert! mmm…
After reading the previous comment I will add that chicken and dumplings is a close second!

My favorite comfort food would have to be homemade vanilla pudding. I like to eat it hot off the stove…no time for cooling when I need comfort!

My fave comfort food of all time is something my family calls “matomac”. It’s just tomato soup with elbow macaroni. A good friend made it for me at age 13 on a really bad day and ever since it has been my go to comfort food. I’m 36 now and still have it at least a couple times a month. Super easy and super cheap too!

My favorite comfort food is, believe it or not, S.O.S. It’s a food that most people claim originated with the Army… pretty much a white sauce with chucks of meat (we used dried beef, but I’ve heard of using sausage & beef too), which it then served over toast. Love the stuff. Super cheap. However, I know that some (many) people hate it, so I think I might be in a minority here.

My go to comfort food is popcorn. If I want it fast I do the microwave popcorn but if I want the feel of back home, I’ll make it like I always watched my Dad do it on Sunday nights on the stove. The downside, I usually add much more butter than I probably should!
Beth on January 12th, 2010 3:01 pm
