Welcome to 2010! It’s a brand new year and I know many of you are deciding that this is your year to get organized. I have always said one of the best places to start in this quest is with menu planning. Planning for your week in advance, saving time in the kitchen, eating healthier, saving money on groceries and basically eliminating this stress from your life are all excellent reasons to menu plan. I feel such a sense of accomplishment from knowing what I’m going to eat for the week and my entire family benefits. Menu planning is totally flexible and with practice and/or with a little help it can be such an amazing tool to implement into your organizational plan.

There are many menu planning resources out there for you to utilize. Many of them do all the work for you and are a great service for those who feel they don’t have the time to menu plan or who just want someone else to take all the guess work out it.
However, like me, many of you enjoy perusing recipes each week and selecting your own recipes to include in your menu plan. I know for myself I’m very particular about the recipes I chose and have a specific recipe criteria in place to help me achieve my goal of finding easy, quick and healthy recipes to include in my plan. So when I heard about the service Plan to Eat I was very excited because it is a menu planning service that gives you the freedom of selecting your own recipes and then stores and organizes them permanently for you all in one place.
Plan to Eat allows you to import recipes from popular recipe websites or easily input them by hand. Then all you need to do is drag and drop them into your menu planning calendar, print off your calendar if you chose AND as well print off a complete shopping list based on your chosen recipes. It’s absolutely brilliant and organized!

What makes Plan to Eat particularly brilliant though hands down is how easy the site is to use. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Things designed to make our lives less complicated tick me off when they are too complicated for us simple minds to figure out in the first place. I abhor complicated with a passion. So, considering I’m a pretty tough critic, I was very surprised when I checked out Plan to Eat and discovered the simplicity with how easy it is to use.
I just love the recipe import feature. Many other resources similar to this one require you to manually add your recipes to the site. Um no thanks, that would take me forever. As you know I get the majority of my recipes from sites such as Taste of Home, Tasty Kitchen and Kraft Canada. I’ve used the import feature with all three of these sites and all I have to do is add the recipe url, hit import recipe and voila my recipe is there, complete with ingredient list and instructions. You can even upload a photo if you’d like. It also keeps track of my favorite websites so I can go straight there from within Plan to Eat. Stuck for ideas? Plan to Eat has a “search google” toolbar that lists your results right there with a handy import recipe button beside each one. Just so awesome!!
I also love that you can add tags with each of your recipes to make finding them again a breeze. I can create any tags I like and am not limited by a select few.
I also love love love the shopping list feature. It automatically adds all the items from your selected recipes and then easily allows you to select/deselect items you don’t need. You can also add in additional items as necessary. Further making my life easier, when I print out the list I’m given a handy reference key that shows me which ingredients go to which recipe in case I need to make substitutions at the grocery store.
Plan to Eat is available for $4.95 a month or if you pay for a year at a time it is $39.00/yr which works out to only $3.25 a month. You don’t have to just take my word for the awesomeness of this site either because you can try Plan to Eat absolutely free for 30 days to see if you like it.
Today Plan to Eat has kindly offered to giveaway TWO one year gift subscriptions to two lucky readers. I’d really like to giveaway these two gift subscriptions to someone who thinks this service would benefit them in their menu planning endeavors. Take a look around and if you think this is a service that would work for you leave a comment on this post letting me know.
I’ll close the giveaway next Wednesday, January 6th at 9:00 pm PST and the winner will be chosen at random from the comments left.
Happy New Year everyone!!

I’m trying to get organized with cooking for the new year, but I haven’t figured out a menu planning system that works yet for me. I’ve looked at this website, and it looks like it’d be perfect! Especially since I want something computer-based that both my husband and I can use.
Marjorie on January 1st, 2010 3:20 pm
This service would be a godsend. Right now I save recipes on several different websites. Being able to import my favorites to one location would be awesome. Also, I’ve tried menu planning before, but just can’t seem to get it to work for me. I just might be more successful with Plan to Eat.

I could use this. I’m new to menu planning and am finding it hard to get organized. I think this would be a big help.
Crista on January 1st, 2010 4:15 pm
This looks really, really neat. I just signed up for the free trial because the Lord knows I need all the help I can get. My biggest problem with meal planning has been trying to find the time to do it. Between planning out the meals, then writing out a list of what I need for them, then cross-checking my list with what is in the pantry already, then making out a shopping list, then shopping… by the time the cooking part, which is the fun part to me, comes around, I’m just exhausted.
Jessica on January 1st, 2010 4:16 pm
Please Help me with menu planning! 3 boys and a husband keeps me on my toes with making something everyone likes and enough for leftovers.

Dawnette Thomas on January 1st, 2010 4:27 pm
I currently use a paper version for my planning. I find that when I shop and eat according to my menu, not only do I eat healthier but we spend less money. However, I don’t do this each month because I simply run out of time. This would make like easier and the budget better.
Carmen on January 1st, 2010 4:33 pm
Oh! I would love to win this! I struggle with menu planning so much.
Tamara on January 1st, 2010 4:37 pm

Michael on January 1st, 2010 6:24 pm
This would be amazing. Working 16-18 hour days it’s really hard to have the motivation to cook a real meal at the end of the day. Having a meal schedule and simplified shopping list would make it worlds easier to make dinner each night.
Elissa on January 1st, 2010 6:24 pm
I am fairly new to being a devoted meal planner and this site looks amazing!! Thanks for sharing!
Sandi Shealy on January 1st, 2010 6:24 pm
Over the last year, I have cut my grocery bill in half and trying to go even lower this year! I plan my menu/groceries/coupons every week and would be very curious to see how this works. I play “The Grocery Game” so I am not against paying for a service, if I feel it is worth it! =)

Seeing that my husband and I are following a strict budget program, I welcome anything that is budget affordable and helps me do one less thing as we own a business and i work as a substitute for a school district and do not have a set schedule.
Renee on January 1st, 2010 7:26 pm
WOW! Not only an awesome site, but one that does not require you to enter payment information ahead of time! AND a full month (rather than days or limited access) for a trial! This is done right and could SO help my family of 6 as we strive to manage to keep up with 4 kids at 3 schools plus activities!
ter@waaoms on January 1st, 2010 7:27 pm
sounds like a great idea. I am good at looking at recipes but making my menu still proves difficult even though I’ve been attempting it for a couple years now.

Melissa Ritchey on January 2nd, 2010 2:42 am
I am a menu planning newbie! I would love to have something like this to save me time but also add variety to our menus. Working full time outside of the home, menu planning always falls behind and we usually end up grabbing something on the go. I think something like this would help us with that problem. Thank You for sharing this site.
Kal on January 2nd, 2010 2:47 am
I do a weekly menu plan but still spend a lot of time looking for recipes and such to do so. The versatility of this program along with shopping list sounds so much better than any other program I’ve come across; I would LOVE to use it!

This sounds like exactly the kind of menu planning system I’ve been looking for. . . =)
Berit on January 2nd, 2010 5:42 am
I so need to get on board with menu planning! I keep saying that but never quite get there. This is DEFINITELY something I could use – and looks like a great tool to help me do it!!! With DH and I working full-time, and a 4-year old at home -this is only one area that needs organizing (something I haven’t quite gotten the hang of, yet).
Tammy on January 2nd, 2010 5:59 am
This would really come in handy. I find it very time consuming to make a menu plan!
LISA on January 2nd, 2010 6:16 am
I would love to have this. I have so much trouble trying to plan meals. I work in the evenings and I need a way to have somethng easy for my husband to make for supper with everything planned out so he can just put everything together.

Between being a wife, home maker, homeschooling mom, Scout leader, bible study teacher, produce farmer (pant, pant, pant) I am finding I really need to get a grip on my time! All on a very limited budget. Winning this would be great!
Sharon on January 2nd, 2010 12:02 pm
I’m on such a bad/unorganized path right now when it comes to meal planning. Grocery shopping for just a few meals at a time, etc… This sounds like a great program with the grocery list, able to import recipes…This could be just what I need!! Thanks for getting the word out about this plan!
Jen Sheely on January 2nd, 2010 12:03 pm

Just as the website says, I have been trying repeatedly to reinvent the wheel when it comes to meal planning. I’ve tried at various times but never had more than one week planned at any time. It made life easier to have it done, though. This would be a great complement to my couponing and sale watching.

Diane Kerchner on January 3rd, 2010 7:52 am
This is such an easy to use service that I immediately signed up for the trial release. I have already planned an entire week of menus and am rearing to go on the rest of the month. Talk about a great start to a new year! This service links to recipes from my favorite source, A Taste of Home. Thanks so much for making me aware of it! And YES, I’d love to win 2 years of it
Janice Williams on January 3rd, 2010 8:02 am
Great tool! PLAN TO EAT could go one step further and link coupons with the grocery list printout. Manufacturers should be approached to participate or “bid” on that marketing spot.
Leah W on January 3rd, 2010 8:19 am
This looks awesome!! I love that you can use your own recipes. I could always use a little help in my planning area! I’m just getting started with it all!

This would be great to help with no buying extra that would go to waste.
Mary on January 3rd, 2010 9:30 am
Wow! I really need this. I’m good at pulling something out of the freezer in the morning, but after teaching all day I can’t come up with anything easy, quick, or interesting to do with the chicken. My three kids and husband are soooooo tired of the same old baked chicken!
Beth on January 3rd, 2010 9:51 am
I really like the idea of 1) being able to share with individuals; 2) an easy drag and drop system, and 3) being able to easily upload from the web. On feature I’d like to see is an option to download menus, lists, etc. so that I don’t have to JUST have it online or printed. Thanks for a give away. I think this could really help to take my menu planning to the next step!
Shannan Felix on January 3rd, 2010 9:58 am
I love that you can import. I would love this!
Jean C on January 3rd, 2010 10:03 am

Suzanne on January 3rd, 2010 12:00 pm
This would be awesome for me!! I would LOVE to have this. I fell off the menu planning wagon because of time constraints! This would really cut the time needed and I would be able to focus on saving more! Thanks so much.
Keri on January 3rd, 2010 12:07 pm
I have used several of the “other” sites that seem to be able to do it all. But then I end up having to do too much work and it doesn’t simplify anything. My New Years Resolution is to cut our grocery buying down from $600 a month for our family of 4 down to $300 a month. Started today: $57.68 for 5 meals PLUS enough meat for 3 additional meals. I was VERY proud of myself. My goal was $80. I would SO enjoy this “late Christmas/early birthday” present!
Lainie on January 3rd, 2010 12:25 pm
This looks like it would save me several steps! Love it!
Candy on January 3rd, 2010 12:42 pm
What a great tool for menu planning, it seems pretty easy for the technologically challenged – aka – me. I have just finished cleaning out and taking inventory of my cupboards and freezer. I’m determined that this is the year I’m going to menu plan and organize my house. Thanks for the opportunity to win this wonderful resource.
Kerri on January 3rd, 2010 12:53 pm

I would love to use this tool to keep me organized. I’m forever looking for the envelope I wrote down the week’s meals on and took to the store with me. I’m sure my family would love it too, as I get frazzled and we eat the same things over and over.
Mary Jo on January 3rd, 2010 5:06 pm
This looks like a great service!
Jolynda on January 3rd, 2010 5:12 pm

Sally B on January 3rd, 2010 5:14 pm
I actually checked out this site a while ago (from one of your previous entries). I would love to try it but Hubby is not working right now and I am afraid to spend money for something I am not sure I would like.
I do a monthly calendar. I would love the recipe import feature. I need a good way to organize my menus and recipes.
Cortney on January 3rd, 2010 5:43 pm

This would help me plan menus so much easier then on my weekly piece of paper I stick on the fridge on Sunday! I could also access it from both work & home. I love reading cookbooks, but that is more for fun. I actually get most of my recipes from the internet, so the import feature is amazing!
Jenny Goldsby on January 3rd, 2010 7:02 pm

This sounds amazing! I have used one of those recipe plan services because I am so awful at meal planning, but I have wished there was a way to make my substitutions or change certain days of the week to more seasonally appropriate recipes. The fact that it makes your shopping list and you can add or subtract right from it is genius! Hope I win this one.

This is a great tool. It seems like such an easy way to plan my meals around what my family actually likes rather than what some recipe builder tells us is good.
Kalee on January 4th, 2010 3:28 pm
Wow, this service looks awesome! My husband and I really need to quit eating out so often, but it seems when we eat at home it is the same thing over and over. We really need to cut our grocery/dining budget this year, and this would be an awesome tool so that when I have time I can import recipes I want to try and they would all be right there in one place when I plan for the week. Right now I absolutely dread menu planning and so I have only done it a couple times in the last year!
Thanks for sharing! Wish I had the budget to sign up now, because I am working on a menu plan right now!
