Workshop #2:  Organize Your Closet

(a quick & simple online workshop)

Runs:  Sept 22nd – Oct 13th

The closet class is a really fun class. It’s two lessons for just $20 US, and the class stays open for an additional week to give students time to get in there and organize their closet!  Aby developed a process to help students create an organized closet that will take the stress out of getting dressed in the morning, plus will help keep closet-clutter away going forward. Three weeks of access to a professional organizer and community of students who will also be organizing their closet…all for what you would pay for minutes of time working with a professional organizer in the home.  This is a great try-it class for students who aren’t sure if online classes are for them, and would really help them organize their home.

Although I was raised in an organized household, I didn’t exhibit many organizational habits until I got married to an organized man. His need for order and control set me on a path for order and control. I think my organizational talents were always under the surface but needed to be “nurtured”. I look back and think how chaotic our lives would have been raising two children as well as working in my former mode. So let it be known you CAN change your habits and those habits can change you for the better.

Being organized would mean I wouldn’t buy duplicates, I would give the gifts I purchase and hide away in advance, and most importantly I wouldn’t feel completely overwhelmed and depressed by most areas of my home. (ouch. that hurt to admit)

      Hi Laura!

I am just beginning to get organized – and I can’t even begin to tell you after years of living with clutter, what a relief it is! I am not anywhere near where I would like to be, as I still have trouble purging, but would love some help on simplifying and organizing my life! Every single time I organize even one shelf, or one cabinet, it feels as though a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I can’t wait until I have that feeling over the whole house. Thanks for posting this giveaway!

If I was organized I wouldn’t have to spend most of my time looking things that should be in their spot. I also want to feel good about my space and coming home to an organized house. Sometimes is so overwhelming I dont know where to start. One day I keep telling myself, one day.

I need better organization of my time. I’m a freak about organizing my stuff, one pie of clutter at a time, but I can’t seem to get a handle on my time.

      Jasmine on September 5th, 2009 11:54 am

Well, I’m a newbie at this organizing thing. In spite of the fact that I’m very detailed, administrative and a classroom teacher with lots of organizational materials, I’ve yet to tap into what can really work for me. I’ve just gotten married and we live in a TINY (read: miniscule) apt in NYC, where there’s no room for my husband to move in his stuff, much less for us to really build a nest! >_< I'm also wanting to try meal planning to help us cook healthier, plan better and save money. Now the school yr is starting and I need to be even more organized b/c I'm a teacher, but I'm also in grad school part-time at night. =O You can see very plainly, I think that learning organizing and simplification skills would simply REVOLUTIONIZE my life. In fact, finding these blogs has already given me breaths of fresh air as I embark on this new journey to 'get it together!' =D

      Tammy on September 5th, 2009 12:01 pm

What being organized would mean to me……that I would stop being so hard myself all the time and that our house wouldn’t be so cluttered and that I could serve my family better.

    10
      Heather on September 5th, 2009 12:02 pm

My parents house is the exact opposite of organized. There were always papers around and at least two or three times a month we were frantically looking around for something. When I got married and moved out I swore that things wouldn’t be that way.

I would love to say that I kept this promise, but in reality it hasn’t been so good. I have all kinds of plans to get organized, but it never happens. I wish that I could use the everything has a place, but I just get so overwhelmed that I give up. I have three young children and I feel like I am drowning in papers and stuff most days.

We will be moving next year and I would love to know how to start out organized in our next house. I think it would help me being a good mom and less stressed and frazzled.

    11
      Jen on September 5th, 2009 12:05 pm

I think being more organized would simplify my life. If everything had its own place, and I could visually see things, it would be easier to “pick up” around the house. Right now I have 2 boys under 3 who have lots of toys! I don’t want toys to take over the home. I’d like to reclaim the rooms in our house to make it a “home”. I’m starting small with the living room and dining room, but I’m noticing that to organize effectively we need to spend money (on bins/containers/bookshelves). So it’s been tricky to organize well and also stay on budget. I know that overall organzing is in constant flux and changing based on how my family changes. I hope to continue to get better at it through the years.

      Marjorie on September 5th, 2009 12:05 pm

It would definitely bring some much needed peace and calm into my life. I just started a job, which often have me working 9+ hour days. I clean and organize, but my house just ends up chaotic again. I have good intentions, but can’t seem to make my efforts stick. Being better organized will help me be a better wife, parent, and employee. And, I’ll gain some much needed sanity in the process!

Rachel Addison on September 5th, 2009 12:40 pm

I feel calmer and more peaceful when my home is organized (which it isn’t right now). I have less frustrations finding things. I have somethings organized and those areas of my home are my favorites.

    19
      Robin on September 5th, 2009 12:44 pm

I agree with Rachel and Nancy – my husband would be happier and I would be more at peace if my house were more organized, more clean, etc. I’m having a hard time balancing a part-time job, an almost two year old son and keeping a decently clean house. Is it possible??!?!

    20
      Kris on September 5th, 2009 12:58 pm

If I were more organized, I would spend less time trying to find things. I could have guests come over without spending an hour “hiding” things in the house. My kids could know where their school things were.

But, I really want to be more organized so that my kids grow up knowing how to be organized. My parents weren’t and I am like them. I want my kids to do better than me.

      Ashley on September 5th, 2009 1:13 pm

This is the first time in almost 15 years that I have not had to work full time. My sweet husband is in the military and we are finally getting to a point where we are not moving around so much, and I am finding myself striving more and more to be organized and bring some semblance of order to our household. While I feel just a tad bit better about it this year, I still have a long way to go. I could so benefit from these!

      Kim on September 5th, 2009 1:18 pm

Oh my goodness. In the areas in which I am organized it is so nice. It saves so much time to know where things are.

First – if I win, I’ll be out of town and away from email until Sunday, Sept 13. Please know that I will respond ASAP!

Okay, so how has being organized changed my life? I save SO much time because I know what I have and where to find it, then where to put it back once it’s been used. Having systems to organize myself (chores, grocery shopping, etc) has saved me time AND energy…I don’t like wasting either. I’m a first born, so have always longed to be organized, but have really gotten on the right track since having my first child 5 years ago. Cramming another life into our home forced me to get serious about it!

    25
      Tonya on September 5th, 2009 1:45 pm

I think being organized saves you time in the long run and creates a more peaceful home. I want more of this and to help instill it in my young children, who are 3, 4, and 6. They are good helpers so I know we can all work together. Sounds like a great program!

    26
      Rachel on September 5th, 2009 1:52 pm

Hi! I just found your website today in hopes of finding some menu planning and grocery list help. But really, my whole life could use organization. For some reason I am really good at organizing in a work environment, but not so great at home. For me, seeing clutter is overwhelming and depressing. And the task of organizing is always a daunting one because I don’t know what to do with everything!… which becomes MORE overwhelming and thus a never-ending cycle of clutter and and STRESS. I would love to be free of this! I would love to have a place for everything, know where to find things; know where to put things!
      Cheers!!

    27
      Sara on September 5th, 2009 2:19 pm

If I were organized, I wouldn’t have to always frantically look for things right when I need them and have no idea where they are! I just imagine that if I were more organized I would be calmer and happier. Thanks so much for the chance to win!

Robin Flores on September 5th, 2009 2:32 pm

I would get to spend my time doing something besides catching up. I feel like I am always looking for _______ for my husband and never caught up on the housework.
I know I am an organized person, but I do not have enough time to keep up with myself and my family. I need a stream lined system to revise.

    29
      Laura on September 5th, 2009 2:35 pm

I was much more organized as a child, but I seem to have fallen off the wagon. Being organized would really help me manage my life as a stay-at-home-mom. I need to give myself more structure to my day rather than just thinking I’m on vacation. :-)

      Nikki on September 5th, 2009 2:47 pm

Uncluttering my home, unclutters my mind. When things are organized I feel in control and I feel free to be a more creative and fun mom and wife.

    31
      ter on September 5th, 2009 2:52 pm

I would love to get some more ideas on organization. I love when things are organized but time and finances or lack of space prevent me from getting as organized as I would like to be. I feel my home is not organized enough, because I don’t know what to do with some things. I tend to be an all or nothing kind of gal, so if I can’t get it perfectly organized it doesn’t get done, and then I am annoyed by the lack of organization which can lead to depression. For this, and may other reasons, being organized would be benefital to me and my life.

    32
      Kim on September 5th, 2009 3:22 pm

I can so relate to #31 – ter. I’ve always known that being organized would change my life! I have always struggled in this department and I waste valuable time and effort looking for things that don’t have a home. The greatest change would be an emotional one though. It would make me feel so good about myself to be organized as I envy my friends who are, and I beat up on myself for not being organized. I want what they have and yet I never follow through on my great ideas for a system. I am always on a quest to find a system that works! Here I go once again – been at it all weekend!

Since moving to our house a year ago, I’ve been constantly frustrated and overwhelmed. There is so little space, it makes me crazy! Then about a week ago, my husband was sent to Afghanistan. In one week’s time our bedroom has become the catch all. Seriously! I would love to win these classes so I can show him a better home than when he left.

I’ve tried to do some things , but seem to be spinning my wheels when it comes to paperwork. We have a small business at home, and we live on 3 levels.. I hope something can be done to help… everything is always on another level…I hate steps!!Just getting organized a little more would really help.Getting ready for my second hip operation, I hope that will be better too.

While I try really hard to be organized, I’m not very successful at it. Too many half-planned ideas, started but not-yet-finished craft projects, and an endless pile of ironing. Unfortunately for everyone in my house, I’m fighting genetics… my parents are both packrats, almost to the point of hoarding! If I were to win, my husband would have the office as a usable workspace, and my kids’ playroom would get a much needed rehab. Wow! Wouldn’t we all love that?

having an organized house would make my kids lives much better. I believe that due to my disorganization my children are missing out. They don’t play in the basement b/c it is not organized and is a mess. They can never find clothes b/c again their drawers are a mess, plus the laundry is a mess. honestly i can survive with the mess b/c somehow i understand where it all is BUT it is not fair to my kids or husband. Pretty new to this blog/website. A good friend of mine had your link on her blog, and I loved it. I always wanted a clutter free lifestyle… but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. I want to down size, organize and keep things clean. Also be in good habit of it. My husband and I want to have kids very soon, so the sooner I am organized, the better off we will ALL be. Pick me.. Pick me!!

How would (or has) being organized change(d) your life?

When I gave birth to my son three years ago my life forever changed. I feel into such a state of depression because I had no idea how to care for a new baby and my attention was completely focused on my son. After he was born I became a hot mess – a great mom – but a utter disaster everywhere else. Being organized would provide my family the great relief they (and I) need!

      Brittney on September 5th, 2009 5:29 pm

      Hi Laura,
So I am really going to need these classes! I am getting married next Saturday and moving to Guatemala with my DH! So I am just setting up my life in this tiny one-bedroom apartment and already feel myself getting overwhelmed with how I will organize it all. Being in another country brings with it its own challenges because storage containers are probably double the price, so I really need to learn how to get the most bang for my buck. I think these courses would really get me off on a good foot and hopefully start me on the path to life-long organization.

    41
      Jenna on September 5th, 2009 5:37 pm

If I had direction in this area then I know my three small children (6, 4 and 1) and my husband would greatly benefit and I would not be embarrased to have guests over.

“Organized people are just too lazy to look for things!” J/K I waste soooooo much time looking for things and itdrives me crazy! I have 5 children under the age of 9 (one has autism, another has severe food allergies which requires I bake from scratch)that take up most of the spare time I have. I have embarked on the journey of organizing my home and I am happy to say I am 1/2 way there. I know if I can get to the point where everything has a place…then I can teach my family to put everything in its place. That would free up time that I could spend enjoying my family instead of just “maintaining” a household for them!

I’ve always had high organizing ambitions, however with 2 kids, a husband, a dog and a FT job there never seems to be enough time to actually complete a project. When I do get something completed (thanks for all the tidbits on your site!) the feeling is empowering and carries over into all areas of my life. That constant “noise” nagging at me quiets down for at least a short amount of time and lets me really relax. That is until I see the next pile of clutter, shoes, etc. Then the “noise” is back and I can’t seem to get that relaxed feeling back until it is tackled. It would be great to tackle it all with a plan and really be able to enjoy the family!

As a mom of 3, a wife and a full-time student I need to be more organized, but really have no idea where to start. I get excited and want to do this but then I get overwhelmed with it all and give up. I want to be able to show my children how to be organized to help make their life easier. When your life is organized things seem to go more smoothly.

Hi! I could really use these classes. I have three little boys and it seems that each day I get more and more disorganized. As a result, our house is constantly a mess and I can’t find anything! I constantly wonder where my formerly organized self has disappeared to.

Being organized would make life so much easier! I waste so much time looking for things. Not to mention, my stress level would go way down! I have always heard the saying that a cluttered house leads to a cluttered mind. I totally agree with that. I when I look around at my clutter….I can’t even think. Please help give me some piece of mind!

      Thanks!!!!

With a 4yo a 6yo and a 9 month old (all boys!) being organized would mean so much more time being spent on enjoying these 3 boys of mine instead of running around at the last minute because once again I can’t find something or remember where I put it!

I have always been an organized person. I love my home to be organized. However, I never realized how important it would be until I had kids. I have 2 little boys under 2! So having my home organized is crucial for me to remember where things are during my crazy day. It helps me to be less stressed and able to spend more time with my babies.

I have stuff from my two grown children, my father-in-law, who died 10 years ago, my mother, who died 3 years ago, my past jobs and over 500 books and 500 albums (!). I can’t let go!! This impacts my life in so many negative ways, I know, but I can’t seem to get to it..HELP!! I work from home and know I can be much more effective if I could just get rid of stuff and get organized..

I grew up in a military household,so, every time we moved, we had collected more stuff and things always were cluttered in our house. Well, I am now a grandmother and I still don’t have this organizing thing down. Now that I have a granddaughter and another one on the way, I would love to have an organized and neat home for them to come and visit. My daughter is a very neat and organized person, but I think she just didn’t want to keep living the way we have been. I really need HELP! I start a project and then just get so overwhelmed that I end up not doing anything. I would love to have some instruction in this area of my life!!!

I would say (and most people who visit in our home say) that it is organized and tidy. However, we just recently moved and I realize that while on the surface my house seems organized – I’ve just put all my “stuff” up in the attic or in the closets where I can’t see it. Now that I’ve had to move it all – I can see that if I haven’t used it in all these years, I’m not going to.

Organizing would be a positive change in my life: more peace and calm; easier to live my life to its fullest; more time to enjoy life with my family and friends and more time to do the activities that I love to do!

Sue Holderman on September 6th, 2009 2:39 pm

If I was more organized I could spend more time with my family and less time looking for things. I also wouldn’t pay a bill late again, because it was burried on my kitchen table of clutter. I would also have more time to do something that I enjoy like scrapbooking or reading.

It would also make it easier to clean, I’d spend less time picking up things off the floor before I could run the vacuum.

My house use to be clean when I only had 3 kids. After 4 & 5 came it’s never looked the same (and they are teenagers now). I have severe depression and having a messy house makes me more depressed. So now it’s so overwhelming I don’t know where to start or want to start.

We just moved and what little organization I had at my old house has gone out the window. Getting organized as we get settled in the new house would allow us to have a new beginning as well simplify our life. What better time to get organized as we are making our new life in our new home?

And organization would allow me to find my coupons, bills, and other paperwork that I have as CEO of my home and keep it separate from the paperwork for my business. Hopefully allowing both to run smoothly!

I am constantly working on keeping the papers put away and off the table. Then there’s my computer desk and another desk for bills…..a never ending process to keep things decent!! Aren’t those drawers and roll top desk thingy what we use to hide our stuff? HA!!!Mostly kidding!!!I know organization works. I’ve done better in the past and go do so in the days ahead. Organization is a work in progress and thanks for the encouragement.!!!

This is my first time to respond. I retired in July 2007. I worked in retail for 42 years. My dream was to have my house completely organized by December 2008. My dream has now turned into a nightmare. The areas I did get organized are now in a mess. And it is getting close to 2009. I would really appreciate the opportunity to learn from the pros. Thank you

Being more organized I KNOW would not only save me time (looking for things) but also money (buying things I don’t think I have because they are shoved too far back in a cupboard). We have a new baby and it would be great to have all those lost minutes to watch him grow and enjoy every second we have with him until he turns into a teenager and revolts. :)

Being organized with children’s hand-me down clothing means that I only need to buy the bare minimum of clothing for my two girls, and just a little bit more for my boy. It has blessed my kids to have such large, nice wardrobes for very little expense.

I’ve also enjoyed blessing others by handing down outgrown clothing to them.

Being organized would make such a difference in my life. I find I’m spending (more like wasting) so much time trying to look for things. Our bills our getting paid late because we can’t keep track of when everything is due because we have so much paper clutter. It’s very overwhelming and discouraging to live in clutter. It takes away so much from me and especially my family to live with clutter. Like not being able to spend quality time with my family, or my kids not being able to have friends over because the house has to be cleaned first.

      Carolyn on September 7th, 2009 6:01 am

I like to think that I am an organized person, but I don’t think I quite know how to organize my whole household. I’ve been buying more containers to put everything and that really helps, but when I look at my coat closet, under my sink, my hall closet, my bedroom closet and children’s closets I obviously don’t know how to keep things organized or organize them in the first place. I think it’s time I get some help so I can really become organized. When I am organized I can find things more easily and the house seems to be more at peace.

Organization=peace. When I know where something is, I don’t have to stress to find it. When dh asks me for something, and I can find it easily…ahhh….sweet peace. I have been working hard to make my home a Christ-centered, restful, peaceful, inviting home for all those who enter….especially my family. This is a work in process, a journey not a destination and any help I can get…FANTASTIC!

Wow! This would hopefully change my life. I am a total unorganized fulltime working mom of 3 children. I work 30 miles (one way) from my job. My little girl goes to day care that is another 5 miles (one way) in the opposite direction from my work. My two boys are both in elementary school with the oldest one in basketball. That means that I leave the house at 7:15 am and get home at 5:30 pm. My husband also commutes to work. He is up at 4:30 am and home at 7:00 pm. So you can see that organization would totally change our life. Last week I forgot about library for the 2nd grader and basketball pictures for the 5th grader. Organization is a skill that I lack. I have piles everywhere and I don’t even know where I would start. Please, please, please consider me and my family. I know that they would appreciate it as much as I would! Thanks! Angie

I believe being organized helps me be the best wife and mother possible for my family. My husband works two jobs and is also a VP for a non-profit benefitting underpriveleged children in El Salvador. I have a second grade daughter that I home school and a three-year-old daughter that keeps me on my toes. Mix that all together and we have a very busy home! It’s my job to make sure everyone has what they need; I think your workshops would help me facilitate a more orderly home to accomplish that goal. I’d be very excited to have this opportunity! <3

Being organized would put my life on a good track. I am a full-time culinary student trying to manage a job, home, and relationship. Having been quite organized at one time in my life, now the constant struggle to stay on top of things can make life feel overwhelming at times. Getting “control” of my life in certain areas will make staying on top of the uncontrollable areas much more easy. Thanks so much for the consideration!

Thanks for offering this giveaway! I am a scientist with two boys and a recovering hoarder- husband. Now that both the grown ups are ready to live lean, we have to find good tools for controlling what we do keep. More importantly I need to be able to teach the boys how to avoid the chaotic lifestyle that they were born into. In addition, we are looking into moving soon, and would like to have a fresh start when we do.

Not only would I appreciate the workshops, I think my family and I NEED the workshops! Thanks for your consideration!
