Despite every attempt I have made at conquering the incoming paper, our kitchen counters are always covered with “stuff” UGH!

My dining room becomes a collect all especially during the school year. I never now where to put anything so it usually starts out on the table or othe flat surface then it makes it’s way to a drawer in no particular order to get it out of eyesight. I’m getting better about getting rid of some of the kids cute projects from school and only keeping the ones I really love, but with three kids that still equals a lot of stuff.

Our “office/spare bedroom” is the dumping ground. I cringe every time I open the door. I struggle with just chucking it all, but know there is one important piece of paper stuck somewhere in the chaos that I will need as soon as I dump it.

      Julie on July 7th, 2009 4:16 am

I think I have the hardest time with the kitchen. It is the first room we enter, so it is the dumping ground.

      Bethany on July 7th, 2009 4:24 am

My hardest room is our kitchen. It’s the hub of our home so it always seems to have a hoard of everything all around – paperwork, dishes, toys, etc.

    6
      Kacky on July 7th, 2009 4:52 am

I’d have to say the kitchen. And not just the counters, but the whole zone…from where the kids walk in the door to the pantry to the shelves we have in it as well.

      Heather on July 7th, 2009 5:03 am

I’m going to go with kitchen since all family members contribute to The Pile. My dresser top, though, runs a close second.

The kitchen is my hardest room!!!! I always feel like there are a pile a papers in several places on the counter!

I find that my computer desk is the most difficult to keep organized. I have labeled shelves for items to be addressed but it is always that stack of “extras” that bother me. I am looking at it right now and what a mess!

I enjoy your blog. Thanks for sharing all of your ideas.

      Charla

The dining room! Never fails.. I clean it & by the end of the day the table is piled with stuff again.

      jennibell on July 7th, 2009 5:24 am

This is where I struggle the most. I would love to take your workshop!

      Colleen on July 7th, 2009 5:28 am

The area I find hardest to keep organized is my desk, which is tucked into a space in our very small upstairs landing. It’s the dumping ground for everything Mommy, including kids’ pictures, letters, things I need to file and never get around to, etc. It takes up a huge space on our landing, so it makes coming into our bedroom (which is another bad story) even more stressful. Plus, my husband often stubs his toe on the corner as he is going to the bathroom in the middle of the night!

    13
Sara Strand on July 7th, 2009 5:52 am

I struggle with the paper clutter. It takes over my kitchen counter (where I drop the mail when I come in along with everything else in my hands) and then I eventually move it to my desk. Walking the few feet must poop me out because then I leave it and do something else. So I end up with two areas of paper clutter. I have mastered how to make stacks of paper look nice. :)

    14
      Sarah on July 7th, 2009 5:54 am

I find that the hardest place for me to keep organized is our office/guest room. Everything seems to collect in there and paper is just everywhere. It seems that the cleaning and organizing never ends in that room.

    15
Angie in VA on July 7th, 2009 6:01 am

The computer desk. Ugh! How do papers get there and when do they multiply? It’s the worst. I try to keep a pad and pen by the phone, which is by the computer, but it gets covered and many files, notebooks and papers get left there. HELP!

    16
      Sarah G on July 7th, 2009 6:19 am

Pretty much there is something un-organized in every room…..hard to just point out one! :) Not that my house is a mess…..it’s just unorganized and that really frustrates me. Where to even start!??!!?

I guess I would have to say my room….that seems to be the place that things pile up ,if it doesn’t have a home. Ugh!! I need this workshop! :)

    17
      Shannon on July 7th, 2009 6:25 am

tThe area in the house that will be the death of me (ok, over dramatic but you get the point!!) is our kitchen island. When we moved in, I SWORE I would not allow it to become a dumping ground. Yah right!! Ugh, I need a way to keep it organized and clutter free!

    18
      Ruth on July 7th, 2009 6:29 am

No doubt – my desk and all the overflowing paperwork. I used to love doing paperwork, but with a growing family and growing responsibilities (and multiplicity of paper and items to do that it contains) life moves too quickly to keep up with it all! It is now my least favorite task to take care of in managing my home and my life! I find myself procrastinating until it all becomes even more overwhelming and/or urgent to respond to. There’s gotta be a better way!!

    19
      Tricia on July 7th, 2009 6:35 am

Definitely paper is my downfall! I end up stacking everything and then wading through all of it to find what I’m looking for. It’s overwhelming!

    20
      Melissa on July 7th, 2009 6:35 am

My office. I’ve decided that this room has been given too many functions. Computer, bills, kids bookshelves and scrapbooking all in a 10×10 space. There has to be a way to organize it all better but I can’t find it.

    21
      Elizabeth on July 7th, 2009 6:39 am

We have a little desk in the kitchen that is always covered in paper clutter! I have tried so many times to organize it, but to no avail.

    22
      Melody on July 7th, 2009 6:42 am

Our kitchen is definitely the dumping ground, and anywhere else we can pile stuff… and hide stuff… and then theres the bedroom…

    23
      Amanda D on July 7th, 2009 6:42 am

the office- every flat surface is covered in piles and stacks of…I don’t even know what we have in there…

    24
      Jessica on July 7th, 2009 6:43 am

Definitely the kitchen/entryway. That’s where everything gets stacked…mail, random papers my husband brings home from work, grocery lists, etc. I would love to organize our paper clutter!

    25
      Van on July 7th, 2009 6:44 am

My bedroom! I have a large, spacious bedroom which has the potential to be a peaceful haven with a big comfy reading chair, built bookshelves, and lots of natural light. Instead, though, it’s become a catchall for my life — bills, kidstuff, magazines, coupons, and the never ending mail. I want my bedroom back! But I need help to get it back.

    26
      DawnJoy on July 7th, 2009 6:51 am

Paperwork. I used to have it all “figured out” then my husband got me a laptop and took over the desk and old desktop computer. I’ve been displaced and need a new “system”. I just can’t seem to figure it out on my own.

    27
      sarah on July 7th, 2009 6:51 am

i am an organizing freak but my husband on the other hand is not. He wants to be organized but doesnt know how to start or how to keep up. He is a realtor, so paperwork is his business. He has papers all over the house, his car and his office. Please help bring peace to this paper monster.

    28
      Cheryl on July 7th, 2009 6:54 am

The dining room because that’s where my fiance likes to “sort” his mail, aka leave it in big piles everywhere. I found some credit card statements from 2003 that had never been opened! So, he gets a bit behind in his filing. I would love to put my fiancee in this workshop to help him find his own system of dealing with paper.

    29
      Autumn on July 7th, 2009 6:57 am

I consider myself an organized person, and I can organize just about anything. However, paper seems to be my downfall… I can get it organized but have a hard time using my systems once they are set up. Especially difficult for me is my end table on my end of the couch. I pile things to “look at later”. I have a habit of pulling articles and pictures out of magazines, things I want to save and remember for later. I have yet to figure out the best way to organize my bits o’ paper that I accumulate.

Shannon Milbrath on July 7th, 2009 7:00 am

Wow, what a blessing it would be to have help with my biggest challenge: controlling the paper in my home. Thanks for the opportunity of this great give-away!!

    31
      mub on July 7th, 2009 7:04 am

My desk and the table in our entryway! It seems like the landing pad for EVERYTHING and I haven’t found a good way to deal with that yet.

    32
      Tracy on July 7th, 2009 7:15 am

The biggest challenge in my home is the office. All the mail, bills, and correspondence ends up on my desk and the piles keep growing. It’s such a mess and forget trying to find something quickly. So frustrating!

    33
      April on July 7th, 2009 7:21 am

My biggest challenge is my homeschooling material that crosses over and messes up my desk office….what a mess it can be!

    34
      Marty on July 7th, 2009 7:23 am

My kids rooms. Helping them learn to organize themselves and throw away junk without me doing it for them.

    35
Stacy Baker on July 7th, 2009 7:24 am

Do I have to pick just one? :)
My biggest challenge is probably our lack of a foyer coming in off of the garage. You step right into the kitchen from the garage and this is the entry we use most often. As a result, there are shoes everywhere. We are a family of five. I’ve tried all sorts of organizers – both in the garage and in the laundry room (which is in close proximity to the entrance off the garage). Nothing seems to work!

    36
      Shannon on July 7th, 2009 7:29 am

Ughh if you could see the top of my dishwasher and kitchen table you would know that paper is my issue… at work I maintain my paper so well but I can’t seem to do the same at home!!!!

    37
      danielle on July 7th, 2009 7:33 am

Paper! Paper! Paper! Everywhere…especially my desk and kitchen/buffet counter. I seem to have “perfection paralysis”…i can’t figure out how to have the perfect system, so I have none at all!

    38
Jennifer Bennett on July 7th, 2009 7:41 am

      The kitchen…Ugh! :(

    39
Brenda Benjamin on July 7th, 2009 7:41 am

Definately my office is the hardest for me. It’s also my scrapbook room, so there’s always a project mixed in with my bills and paperwork so I have a terrible time finding what I need when I need it.

    40
      Chela on July 7th, 2009 7:44 am

My desk area. I have a desk in my entryway and despite my organizational goals, by the end of the week it is always buried under bills, school papers, coupons, and other paper. To make it worse, sometimes the paper makes its way to the kitchen counter too!

    41
      Darla on July 7th, 2009 7:45 am

Help! Paper is my enemy. Any surface has paper piled on it and not in an organized way. I would love to take this workshop to help get my papers in order and organized once and for all.

By the way, I love your tips.

    42
      Deedee on July 7th, 2009 7:48 am

    43
      Becky on July 7th, 2009 8:04 am

Our office! We just moved our guest room downstairs so that we finally have an office on the main level, but it ends up being a catch all for every piece of paper and every misfit item around. We could definitely use your help, Aby! :)

    44
Carey Mayer on July 7th, 2009 8:07 am

I’d have to say the worst place in our house is the front room and table. Papers, mail, bills, etc. are everywhere. I keep telling myself that I won’t use the shelf as a mail sorter but it keeps happening…

    45
      stampinwithbeth on July 7th, 2009 8:11 am

My living room — it’s where I do everything… sort through the mail, drop off my work stuff, etc.

    46
Wendy Sice on July 7th, 2009 8:14 am

The office/study is the hardest to organise because I end up dumping things in there to sort through later. This is the year to overcome it! I am doing pretty well with it, but I just need a course like yours to tip me over the edge into success! Wendy xx

    47
      Nicole on July 7th, 2009 8:15 am

I have 2 places that are hard to keep organized and I LOVE organizing. The first has got to be OUR bedroom, we always throw stuff in there when people come over because no on goes in there but us. Clothes and junk pile everywhere!
The other place is our kitchen, particularly the butcher block and island. Mail and papers from the kids seem to pile up daily! Plus, my husband is like Pig Pen from Charlie Brown!

    48
      Laurel on July 7th, 2009 8:21 am

Dining room table. We do not eat there, we just pile there. It starts out as a little corner, then the pile slides, then it procreates, then new piles are born. Soon, no wood can be seen.

    49
      Melissa on July 7th, 2009 8:25 am

Rather than using the front door, everyone enters the house through our kitchen sliding door. And right next to that door, the kitchen countertop is a mess! Everything gets piled up there: keys, wallet, purse, cell phones with chargers, notes, mail, as well things that need to be taken outside: a tool or two, random toys, empty containers for recycling…yikes! This small space is forever piling up and I need help! Even though I try to clear it off once a day, I am so tired of it continually looking messy.

    50
      Marcie on July 7th, 2009 8:33 am

My home office for sure. I use it for both work and personal business and the desk in particular is always piled with papers and stuff.

    51
Susan Beecher on July 7th, 2009 8:34 am

My biggest problems area is my office. It is on the first floor and it seems like it is a catch all for everything. Not only it is an office, but it is my crafting room as well. So things just get piled up every where. I start going through it and then I just get frustrated because I haven’t filed or put away for so long. The piles are everywhere and I can’t seem to find my way out. I would love to win this give away.

    52
      bashtree on July 7th, 2009 8:36 am

The hardest thing for me to maintain is our mail pile. I get so many things in the mail, including coupons and samples and magazines, not to mention all the statements, bills, insurance info, and my husband’s graduate school paperwork and whatnot… I haven’t been able to figure out a system that works for both of us and it is nearly driving me crazy!

    53
      ~ alli ~ on July 7th, 2009 8:40 am

My scrapbook paper. Not so much new full sheets, but the scraps and half-used paper. HELP!

    54
      Lisa L on July 7th, 2009 8:40 am

The hardest thing to maintain is our computer armoire which then spills over to our entry table since a lot of the paper clutter has to do with the incoming mail.

    55
      Christa on July 7th, 2009 8:49 am

I recently moved from the Midwest (IA) to the East Coast (MA) and am living out of a small room at my partners parents home.

The hardest thing to organize and maintain is clothing, believe it or not. We have a very small closet and a dresser that’s holding the majority of our belongings, and trying to keep the dirty and clean laundry apart – as well as keeping them separate has become and issue.

    56
      Marsha on July 7th, 2009 8:49 am

PLEASE!!!!! Pick me. I’m a early childhood full-time teacher with 3 little boys (1, 3 and 5) and a husband that works 60-70 hours a week. My paper clutter is BEYOND COMPARE!!!! I need it . . . I can’t keep my professional papers, home papers and kids papers in an organized matter.

    57
      Diane on July 7th, 2009 8:49 am

The hardest place for me to clean and maintain is my computer desk. It always piles up with paper, coupons, bills. I try to find things on it and half of my stuff ends up on my floor! I need some good ideas for fighting the clutter and then maintaining it!

    58
Lisa Newman on July 7th, 2009 8:50 am

At this moment I still cannot define one area that at some point will not get cluttered with paper. The dining room table catches a lot when I attempt to sort or working on projects. But my computer desk is usually the landing strip for bills, printed handouts, messages, and a calendar I cannot see. I will not even discuss my attempts at getting my craft room organized. Ugh!

    59
      Penelope on July 7th, 2009 9:04 am

Hands down, the “dumping ground” at the back door…backpacks, mail, keys, phones, lunch boxes, shoes….ahhhh!

    60
      Leah W on July 7th, 2009 9:06 am

My office and study area. We have bills and school between my husband and I and both have work that requires some home space and time. We don’t have a lot of storage or filing, so everything just starts going into piles all over the room!

    61
Dana Barbieri on July 7th, 2009 9:24 am

I have to say there are many areas of disarray but there is one counter in the kitchen that is the “catch all”. It gets covered with everything.. mail, cell phones, tools, toys, pens. It becomes the dumping ground and I don’t really know how to keep it from being that. Help!

    62
      Eilish on July 7th, 2009 9:25 am

Hardest place for me is anything where I have to deal with paper.

It has not always been that way but since developing MS it is something that always gets away from me – and my pack rat issues have multiplied – I am very literally afraid to get rid of paper

    63
      Kim on July 7th, 2009 9:32 am

Well…my kitchen is the worst but then unfortunately my teeny tiny office is where I pile all of the paper clutter from the kitchen!

    64
      geezee on July 7th, 2009 9:53 am

I found you on orgjunkie and I am thrilled. Being a rather organized person in most aspects, my paper monster has to be tamed through herculean efforts. I sooo want to be freed from whatever it is that is keeping me prisoner to this beast. I would love to win.

    65
      Courtney on July 7th, 2009 10:25 am

The hardest area for me is the dang garage. It small but even so it seems to have issues keeping clean!! Our big project this month is to clean it out, get rid of what is in boxes that has not been used.

    66
      kp on July 7th, 2009 10:31 am

My kitchen counter seems to accumulate so much STUFF! My husband brings home papers, receipts, etc. and I don’t know what to do with them. I also end up keeping things on the counter to remind me to make a phone call, or do this or that. If I put it all into a nice little pile, it’s out of sight, out of mind, and I don’t ever deal with it. I need serious help! I hope I win!

Angie (Losing It and Loving It) on July 7th, 2009 11:05 am

The one area hardest for me to organize and maintain is the guest room. Everything ends up in there and it’s not a pretty sight. It’s no fun getting ready for guests either when there is so much on the bed, floor and the close is stuffed to the gills LOL

    69
      Heather on July 7th, 2009 11:06 am

Can I say the entire house?

Seriously though, I would have to say my guest room..it ends up being the catch-all for everything. “oh, put it in the guestroom..I’ll figure out where it needs to be.” Then we get company and it’s mad dash to stash it somewhere else!

    70
      Colleen on July 7th, 2009 11:13 am

I would have to say the hardest part of my house is my living room and kitchen/dining room. Everyone comes home and just dumps stuff into those two rooms and then they can’t figure out why mom is on them to pick up their stuff and put it away.

    71
      Kris on July 7th, 2009 11:15 am

For me, it’s the laundry room. It’s off the mudroom, which has the door to the garage. So, I often bring in stuff from the car and stick it in the laundry room to get it out of the way. It’s not big enough for a mail center or anything, so it’s just a mess. The sink in there hasn’t been useable in years!

    72
      Cindy S on July 7th, 2009 11:16 am

I constantly struggle with my home office! If someone doesn’t know where something goes – it lands on my desk. If I’m busy during the day, it’s the spot where I toss things to be dealt with later. As you can imagine, this builds and builds and builds. *sigh*

    73
      Robin on July 7th, 2009 11:32 am

My computer room – between the paper clutter, things like adhesive address labels from boxes sent to me (now that I’ve learned I shouldn’t be putting them in the shredder, I have NO idea what to do with them!), random computer odds and ends (cords, CDs without cases, etc), I haven’t managed to get a good grip on how to clean things up there and KEEP them clean!

    74
Fernanda Mendes on July 7th, 2009 11:47 am

Our bedroom for sure because it’s easy to throw stuff in there to clean up the rest of the house but then when I go to bed at night it stresses me out. It gets so overwhelming that I don’t even know where to start.

    75
      Suzanne E on July 7th, 2009 11:49 am

The SPARE BEDROOM! It’s an easy area to stash things when I’m not sure where they can go! As a military wife it’s a challenge to find a system since we’re always moving into a different house. Each house has it’s different configurations. I feel like I just got into a good swing, and now it’s time to move again! Thanks for your post!!!

Well, it’s a toss up between our kitchen counter and my side table in our bedroom. They seem to be the catch all location for things that don’t fit anywhere else in the house! So excited about this course and have fingers and toes crossed!!

    81
      Chelsea on July 7th, 2009 2:19 pm

I have the hardest time with my bedroom…our two bedroom apartment with 4 of us makes that the catch all room. Bills, magazines, clothes, and just clutter is most of it.

    82
Intentionally Katie on July 7th, 2009 2:32 pm

My master closet is always a catch-all for some reason. There are the most random things in my closet from bathroom tiles to feather boas. (for my kids dress up, of course!)

    83
      Peggy on July 7th, 2009 3:02 pm

Master bedroom is a disaster because I can “stash and dash” when company comes over. Plus it is attached to our laundry room so things just get dumped in that room. I would love to get it organized so my husband doesn’t have to tip toe around all the piles. Thanks!

I feel like I should don a hazmat suit and be prepared for the worst when I enter my computer room/office. For me, this is the part of the house that is the HARDEST to organize! I am a teacher, so the room is overgrown with materials and lesson plans for my students and activities. In another corner, my sewing machine and craft activities have taken up a spot. Wedding items that have not been used are in another corner (we got married a year ago). And, bless his heart, my husband has the other 5% of the room…but even his desk has been taken over by papers from grad school, work, and receipts.

      I feel like I live in a war zone…HELP!

The KITCHEN, no doubt about it! It is the most-used, most-loved and most-abused room in our home. The cabinets are organized just fine and generally stay that way. The problem is with the countertops and all of the miscellaneous stuff that finds its way there.

      Annie on July 7th, 2009 3:36 pm

I would definitely say that my bedroom is the worst. I also just chuck things in and think that I’ll get to it later in the day. Nope – I just shut the doors (there are 2 entrances) when the sitter comes and pray that the kids leave it that way. But… our home office/study isn’t functional for either of those purposes. It became a collect all when we had a party 4 weeks after moving into our house, and is still that way 18 months later – despite all my best efforts.

      Thanks for the much-needed chance!

I find it hard to organize our front room. It contains a computer, piano, and all our homeschooling books as well as an oversized chair. We end up storing all our paperwork in boxes that are currently overflowing and need to be filed. The computer desk is usually also overrun with papers. By far, the hardest for me to organize is my paper clutter. This class would be SO helpful for me. My biggest problem is that the paper clutter has made its way to every room of my house (kitchen, office, bedrooms, livingroom, even the basement). I feel like I am being suffocated by it! My other problem is my husband’s messiness. If I can conquer my paper problem, I think I will be better able to manage my husband!!!! I’ve got my fingers crossed that I win this class!

I have a real struggle with my kitchen counters and kitchen table. Every flat area is covered with stuff. I have to literally move piles in order to have counter space to prepare dinner. Granted, my piles of papers are organized (somewhat), but it is such a waste of time every time I have to move stuff. Usually what I do is take all the piles and move them to my dining room table (which we don’t use because it’s totally buried) to deal with later (ha!), but then the whole ordeal starts all over again. I Need HELP!

Without a doubt, it is the attempt at a “command center” that is failing miserably. I can’t tell whether it’s a system my husband just isn’t interested or willing to use, or if it’s in the wrong place in the house, or if we are simply not spending enough time taming the piles of papers that inevitably get shoved into one of the FOUR receptacles I now have bought. Whatever the case, it is simply NOT working. help!

I am in the midst of a move, so at the moment, my entire house is a disaster area.

At any other time, though, my desk would definitely be the culprit suffering from the greatest amounts of clutter. I work, play, eat, and sleep at my desk. Plus in the new house, my desk will be moving into my bedroom instead of an office, which means I will be forced to look at or deal with the clutter instead of just closing the door and walking away.

/hopes luck is on my side. :D

Paper – it piles up on the dining table then gets dumped in the office to sort. Have all available space piled with papers and other things that have no home. Would love a system to work with as I’m sure I don’t need to keep 75% of what comes in but I never know when I might need it.

School papers, mail, coupons, papers I need/want to read, magazines, photos – PAPER is consuming me and my house! They start on the kitchen counter. When that pile gets too big to manage (or when people are coming over), I usually move it to a spare chair in the dining room (does anyone really use their dinin room for dining?). When all of those chairs are full, I usually move the piles upstairs to a desk in our master bedroom or to one of those attractive wood crates or baskets (not sure they are still considered attractive once they are overflowing with stuff). You’ll even find a few of these piles under the bed covered in dust. The paper shuffle goes on, and on, and on. Help me tame this monster! It is going to eat me alive if it doesn’t claim one of the kids first.
