This giveaway is now over.  The winner is Angelle!

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of being invited to attend a webcast put on by Peter Walsh and Office Max.  For those that might not know, Peter Walsh is the organizing guru behind the show “Clean Sweep” and has appeared on Oprah many times as an organizing expert.

The following post is a compensated (yet honest) review in conjunction with BlogHer and Office Max.

exclusofficemax

Why the webcast?

Peter and Office Max have collaborated together to create a new line of organizational products called the [In] Place System designed to offer one-of-a-kind mix-and-match filing essentials that help you better manage files, reduce clutter and increase productivity.  The reason for the webcast was to give us a sneak peek at these products and what they have to offer.   I was also sent a few samples to try out as well.

inplace

So what did I think of the products?

Let me start by saying that when I received my kit in the mail and opened it up I was taken aback by the plainness of it.  The pieces are all designed out of a clear poly type material and I just didn’t understand why anyone would be happy with products that didn’t include bright colors and sassy designs.  It was while watching Peter’s webcast that a light bulb went off in my head when he said this “nothing here ties you to any particular color scheme”.  That’s when I realized that perhaps not everyone feels the same way as I do with an over abundant joy for all things swirly and flowery in bright oranges and greens :)

And you know what?  He’s right of course.  Very cleverly Peter has designed his system with a neutral base color allowing customers to infuse their own color choices into it if they so choose.

inplaceb

I had to laugh though because clearly Office Max anticipated users like myself and included file folders from their DiVoga line that suited me so perfectly in their bright orange color and patterned designs.  These can easily be used in conjunction with Peter’s products if you like a little color in your life as I do.  And if you don’t well that’s okay too.  It’s that flexible!

divoga_xoxo_1

Portability

One of the other nice features of Peter’s designs is the portability of his products.  They are designed to move with you.  For instance this product below called the File Tote has handles on it so you can easily take your files with you wherever you might need them.  This would be great for keeping near your Command Center for all those papers that always seem to clutter up dining room tables.  If you have files with papers that need action you can just grab your tote and take it with you to access and action items while waiting to pick up your kids from school or while you wait on them during one of their activities.  I love that.  It’s also only $9.99 which is very reasonable.

inplacea

In fact all of Peter’s products are affordably priced and compliment each other perfectly.

The starter kit is priced at $29.99 and includes the following:

  • 1 document wallet
  • 3 document sleeves
  • 1 document envelope
  • 3 file folders
  • 1 Post-It Cube
  • 1 Erasable Marker (designed to use directly on the file folders and sleeves)
  • 5 Clip Tabs

Peter Walsh is always so motivating to listen to and I would have to agree with him when he said it’s critical to keep flat desk surfaces clear for greater productivity.  I know when my desk is cluttered with piles of paper I’m so totally distracted I get nothing done.

Webcast

I’ve gotten special permission to share the webcast today with my readers!  And guess what?  Peter Walsh answers one of my submitted questions.  Oh yes he does, how cool is that!

Considering the amount of paper clutter I have laying around, this would be a great start… I might need about 10 of them, though :)

I highly recommend Peter’s first book “It’s All Too Much” from which I gleaned a lot of direction in my own organizational quest. Although he gives some practical ideas for carry out your plans in the 2nd half of the book, it’s the first part of the book I love best. Here he explains the WHY about decluttering. It emphasizes cherishing the things that are important to you and discarding/giving away the excess. He asks us to question our motives for keeping the stuff we have to organize ….and much more.

I really like Peter Walsh in that he tells you do not go buy anything until you know what your end goal / result is. I’m not really impressed with this system. Maybe I just don’t see the detail in it. Of course I have never used or liked post it notes. I do wish that Mead 5star would come out with clear binders. I’m into color coding everything.

A great paper organizing system is like the holy grail! I have to admit that I am a sucker for fun and beautiful items, but maybe that is why I’m still so unorganized!

      Margot on April 21st, 2009 10:37 pm

Although I have read every book Peter Walsh has written and try to follow his advice, I always end up w/ a pile of “paperwork” sitting on my kitchen counters. It drives me crazy and never feel like I have conquered my clutter. The portability aspect of his products and the ability to blend in w/ any room and color scheme in my house is perfect! This system sounds exactly like what I need!

I love to watch Peter Walsh in action! He totally inspires me & I have applied so much that I have learned from him when it comes to going through things that I have in deciding what to keep & what to sell. I am no longer attached to something b/c of who made it or who it belonged to if I don’t love it or use it! I cannot explain how free getting rid of clutter makes me feel!!! His system looks great!! I am always looking for a better way to get a handle on papers. It’s my weakness, I think due to my years working in an office & being responsible for filing and keeping track of pleadings and documents. I now rebel against it! LOL! Something like this might help me feel like I had a handle on it without being overwhelmed!

Hi, I really like your blog. This is my first comment here and I wanna use it, not only to tell you how awesom I think this product by Peter Walsh is, but also to tell you that you really inspired me.
I was starting my blog almost a year from now. Originally it was for my collection of selfmade jewellery and my selfmade shirts, but there isn’t even a picture of it on the website so far. Hopefully this will change now.
While reading your blog and I must confess here watching “Desperate Housewives” I knew what I wanted to write about. Being the “perfect” organized woman. I dedicated my blog to the character of Bree for no normal beeing can be perfect, can we?
Well, so much from me. I am afraid, you won’t be able to read my blog, for it’s in German, but I love reading your’s. Keep on going, all the best
      Franzi

I think this is great. As a mom in graduate school, I think that a system like this would help to keep “home things” and “dissertation things” organized and the portability sounds idea for our busy life.

      Thanks for sharing the information!

      Wow!

I would totally need this for both home and work. I am a Medical Records Coordinator and I have piles and piles and piles of papers both home and work. Work is just more organized then home. I think it is because I have to file papers all day at work when I come home I don’t want to even look at a paper. It would make it alot simpler at home if I have something like this. I will check my local Office Max to see if it is there.
